The code enforcement process is typically initiated in a couple of ways:

1. Observation of a code violation by C/E Officer
2. Concern by an individual
   
   

Identifying Possible Code Violations

Code Enforcement relies on residents to help identify possible code violations, such as:

• Abandoned/Vacant houses and lots
• Abandoned and/or inoperable vehicles
• Graffiti on public or private property
• Illegal dumping of trash and debris
• Prohibited sign(s); Not permitted sign(s)
• Large commercial vehicles parked in residential neighborhoods
• Overgrown weeds and vegetation
• Portable basketball hoop standard on streets or sidewalks (city right-of-ways)
• Vehicles parked on front lawns or unimproved surfaces in a residential zone
• Vehicles parked on sidewalks
• Detached recreation vehicle(s), trailer(s), & boat(s) in residential neighborhoods
• Conservation of water; Not following watering schedule

Specific Information

Please be prepared with specific information, such as the address of the property, a short description of the possible violation. Complaints may be made anonymously, however, this may restrict Code Enforcement's ability to do a follow-up on the complaint or our ability to obtain additional information that we might need to resolve the situation. 

4. What is the procedure for following up on possible code violations?

Response Time

Code Enforcement tries to respond to all complaints within 24 hours, however, some situations that may arise that pose a serious risk to health and safety are given priority and may delay in responding to some complaints.

Addressing the Complaint

For all types of code complaints, the first step in addressing the complaint is an inspection by the officer to see if any code violations actually exist, and if so, a written notice will be sent. The process of each notice depends on the violation, some indicting more time than others but most written notices come with a courtesy, first and final notice. If the individual response for the violation appears unwilling to correct or comply, the officer will attempt to make contact before starting a citation process. 

5. What penalties result from code violations?

In most cases, the individual responsible for the code violation is given the opportunity to voluntarily correct the situation and comply with the code without any penalty. If the correction is not made, then the individual may be cited and administration fees assessed.

7. Why did I receive a 72 hour tag on my vehicle?

A 72 hour tag indicates that a vehicle is:

1. Stored on the street with expired registration

2. In nuisance condition on the street. (Dirty, cob webs, flat tires, etc.)

Any vehicle that gets tagged needs to be completely removed from the street.

8. Why did I receive a notice regarding my trash cans being stored in the front of my property?

Trash cans need to be placed behind a fence or enclosure after trash pick up days. They may not be stored in the front nor the side of the property unless screened from public view.
